Had the character been a real boy, the story arguably would have been over after Pinocchio was attacked by the Cat and Fox and strung up to die since it’s difficult to believe a child would survive being hanged for so long (48). Aside from fire (17), any danger that comes to Pinocchio leaves him relatively unscathed. When attacked by the murders, Pinocchio’s back easily breaks the blades “into a thousand splinters” when a normal boy would’ve been injured severely by the knife (46). By keeping Pinocchio a puppet with human characteristics, certain danger is removed from the story since Pinocchio’s wooden body doesn’t sustain damage easily. The story serves as a warning to naughty children, using a puppet to demonstrate extreme, violent situations with nefarious characters.
Pinocchio story moral lesson how to#
By stating clearly how he deviated from being a proper child, Pinocchio warns the reader how to stay on the path of good. When Pinocchio realizes he made a mistake, he lets out a long-winded speech demonstrating the lesson he learned and promising to behave next time (79, 89, 100, 132). While they may influence his decisions, he ultimately makes the decision to listen to them instead of behaving like a good boy. In the latter examples, Pinocchio is aware of what is right and wrong yet allows himself to listen to the young schoolboys who pretend to be his friends. He sells an alphabet book Old Joe bought him (26), suddenly leaves town with two miscreants (37), disobeys the fairy several times (54, 61, 124), and follows his “friends” when they don’t have the best interest for Pinocchio in mind (95, 120). Though he can be swayed by others, Pinocchio mainly gets into trouble by his own impulsive actions. It is only through the consequences of his actions does Pinocchio learn, though the pain from the lesson is soon forgotten when he comes across a new event that tantalizes him more than behaving. Once Pinocchio receives feet, he runs from Old Joe (9) and gets his “father” thrown in prison (11).
His first action of striking Old Joe in the shins (5), demonstrates his deviant nature from the start.
Aside from being initially brought home by maestro Cherry, Pinocchio doesn’t have any interactions with people starts him a blank slate of emotion and experiences.
While he has no visible features, he causes trouble for maestro Cherry by starting a fight between him and Old Joe (4). Pinocchio’s introduction shows him as a supernatural entity controlling a piece of wood. Through his adventures, he eventually learns how to be a proper boy by being selfless with his time and money. While Pinocchio tries to make his father proud, he often fails due to a fun and interesting event that casts out any sense he may have. The story is fast-paced with adventure after adventure leading Pinocchio into bizarre scenarios that take advantage of his naivety. From the beginning, Pinocchio is a stubborn and wild puppet that constantly disobeys his father without any regard for his action’s consequences. While there is the mention of a cricket and a fairy in Collodi’s work, it is darker than the Disney version most people are familiar with. However, Collodi added more to the story when readers became upset at the ending.
